Social networks existed long before Facebook and LinkedIn. And one of the oldest social networks in the City is the one between law firms and the mergers and acquisitions teams of banks.

Until about 10 years ago it might have been very beneficial for a corporate lawyer to have a good friend in each of the big investment banks who could refer work. Today, the situation is rather different, with companies operating formal systems for selecting lawyers.
