Telecom analysts cautiously welcomed BT's decision to appoint Sir Christopher Bland as its new chairman after the revelation on Thursday morning that beleaguered chairman Sir Iain Vallance will step down in May

Analysts said the appointment of Bland, currently chairman of the BBC, will help Peter Bonfield, BT's chief executive, to progress unfettered with the reduction of the company's debt position.
