New European trading rules designed to split research and execution costs could have major implications in the US, according to a new report.

The EU's revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, Mifid II, coming into force in January 2018, will force fund managers in the region to either pay for research themselves or pass on the cost to clients in separate accounts. The rules are aimed at bringing greater transparency to cost of trading.
