Citigroup has appointed an adviser to ECB president Mario Draghi as its top economist in Europe, with the big City investment banks under more pressure than ever to prove the quality of their research.

The US bank said in a statement that Arnaud Marès was joining as its chief European economist with responsibility for its economics research team in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
