European companies have been warned to prepare for a fresh wave of environmental regulation and the liabilities it will bring.

The environmental liability directive, which follows the "polluter pays" principle, must be national law in European Union countries by 2007. Other directives, relating to waste, water and motor vehicles, are also due to be implemented.
