EU summit to push controversial proposals on takeover rules

European Union leaders will press diplomats in Thessaloniki this week to finalise the tortuous attempt to produce harmonised takeover rules on the basis of a controversial recent Portuguese compromise proposal.

EU diplomats, who have failed to make progress on the issue for the past few weeks, will be told to try and find a solution that incorporates the Portuguese suggestion that companies be allowed to opt in or out of defences against hostile takeover bids.
