Jes Staley made inaccurate statements about his close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the Financial Conduct Authority alleged in the first day of a court battle over whether the ex-Barclays boss lied about his links to the late sex offender.

The FCA banned Staley from senior jobs in finance two years ago and fined him £1.8m. The watchdog claimed he “recklessly approved a letter” that undersold the closeness of his relationship with Epstein, which dated back to his days at JPMorgan.
