German finance edging closer to gender parity at board level

It was 2011 when Josef Ackermann, then the head of German lender Deutsche Bank, uttered his now infamous quote that having more women on the bank’s board would make it “prettier and more colourful”.

It was a poor choice of words from a chief executive that served as a sad reminder not only of the state of play in the financial services industry but also at the top of Germany’s biggest companies.
