Gulf influence key as top activist targets HSBC

Two Gulf investors that have built stakes in HSBC could emerge in a key role influencing the outcome of a push by one of Europe's most activist shareholders for a review of the UK bank's strategy.

Knight Vinke last night called for HSBC's board to open discussions with the fund manager and other institutional stakeholders over "the future direction and governance of the group". Knight Vinke is thought to hold less that 1% of HSBC.
