The regulatory system is under attack. In the US, president Donald Trump has fired watchdog bosses and threatened to disband entire agencies. In the UK, policymakers have ousted Competition and Markets Authority chair Marcus Bokkerink in a bid to show they are deadly serious about getting regulators to help drive growth.

For those who have come through the deluge of post-financial-crisis rule making, scaling back the rulebook should come as a relief.
