HSBC has appointed its group head of strategy and planning to run its struggling European operation ahead of a wider restructuring that is expected to hit its investment bank in the region.

The bank has named Stephen Moss as regional chief executive for Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada. The position excludes responsibility for the UK. He will start in the role on 1 March.
