Bill Gates, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, the software company, recently caused a stir in the sustainable-investing world by declaring that campaigns to get investors to shun the most polluting stocks had probably reduced global emissions by, er, zero.

Activists would do better to put money into companies working on innovative ways to cut emissions or help the world adapt to a warming planet, he said.
