Wall Street bank executives were initially defiant when US president Donald Trump signed an executive order in January scrapping diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the federal government and at its contractors.  

But US firms quickly backtracked on their public displays of support for greater representation of women and ethnic minorities in their ranks — worried they would be sued for sticking to their guns or come under attack from right-leaning pressure groups.
