Legal & General has agreed to take over a £1.6bn section of National Grid’s pension fund — one of the UK’s largest — confirming a record year for such deals.

The UK insurance group has taken on the responsibility to pay pensions for a part of National Grid’s £20bn scheme, which serves former employees of its regulated gas transmission business. In exchange, the insurer will take delivery of £1.6bn of bonds held within the scheme.
