Merrill Lynch, has fired Tom Davis, vice-chairman and a former contender for the job of chief executive, following his refusal to testify in investigations into the collapse of Enron.

At the same time Merrill fired Schuyler Tilney, head of energy in the bank's investment banking division, also for refusing to testify in Enron investigations.
