MPs investigating the collapse of key government contractor Carillion have reacted with incredulity at the responses given by its auditors at a hearing today.

One of the MPs said he "would not hire KPMG to audit the contents of my fridge" after hearing the accountancy firm failed to check whether a key multimillion-pound invoice total was agreed by both parties.
