Nasdaq talks merger with NYSE

Nasdaq, the US electronic stock exchange, has made tentative approaches to the New York Stock Exchange about a possible merger between the world's two biggest equities markets.

Robert Greifeld, chief executive of Nasdaq, has made an informal approach to the NYSE in recent weeks about a possible tie-up between the two, according to a report in Tuesday's Wall Street Journal.
