Oaktree Capital Management, a US buy-out house, said today it would back Smithfield Food's acquisition of the European meats business of Sara Lee Corporation, a US food and clothing manufacturer.

It will be Oaktree's second acquisition of a food company this year, following the purchase of Richmond Foods, a UK ice-cream maker, last week.
