The biggest pension fund in the US reported an 18.4% gain on its investments for the fiscal year ended June 30, one of its strongest performances since the financial crisis.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System rode the overall run up in the market as its investments in domestic and international stocks notched a return of 24.8%, higher than the fund's internal benchmark.
