Poor John Gutfreund, the former senior partner of Salomon Brothers, was memorably portrayed on the cover of Business Week in summer 1985 as the King of Wall Street.

It would probably be fair to say that not everyone considered John the most user-friendly person in the industry but it was during his time as leader that the trading power of Salomon Brothers became zlegendary. If you were a serious player in bonds, you had to deal with Salomon because no competitor traded blocks in the same size.
