UK High Court rejects Venezuelan president’s claim over £1bn in gold held by BoE

Maduro regime said it intended to use bullion held at the Bank of England to finance coronavirus relief efforts

A British judge rejected a claim by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro seeking the release of $1bn of the country’s gold reserves held in a Bank of England vault, a decision that sustains US-led efforts to cut off the authoritarian leader’s regime financially.

The Maduro regime said it intended to use the bullion to finance coronavirus relief efforts but the US-supported opposition argued in court that it would be pilfered by regime officials.
