UK unemployment claims reach highest level since 1996

The number of people claiming jobless benefits rose to 2.1 million in April from 1.2 million a month earlier, a 70% increase and the largest month-on-month change since records began in 1971.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in the UK recorded the biggest monthly jump on record in April, with 856,500 new claims, while the number claiming is the highest since 1996, official statistics show.

The figures published on 19 May highlight the scale of the economic damage caused by the new coronavirus on the UK economy, even with expansive government support packages designed to cushion the blow.
