US acquisition puts SAB on global map

In July, South African Breweries bought out Miller Brewing of the US and became SABMiller, transforming itself into the world's second largest brewer

Ten years ago, SABMiller – then South African Breweries – was taking its first tentative steps outside South Africa, where it had been a public company since 1897. In July 2002, when it completed its $5.6bn (E5.7bn) acquisition of Miller Brewing in the US, SAB became SABMiller – and the second largest brewer in the world.

Malcolm Wyman, SABMiller's CFO, who has been with the company since 1986 and has played a pivotal role in its transformation, says: "It's a defining deal for us, because it's turned us from a pure emerging markets brewer into a balanced global brewer."
