The ‘man from nowhere' had been living on borrowed time since underperformance at Dean Witter shook his power base

Perhaps the only surprise was that it didn't come sooner. Philip Purcell, the always improbable chairman and chief executive of Morgan Stanley, was like a cat with nine lives, begging to be given a tenth.
