ABN Amro pushes for EU showdown with Bank of Italy

EU officials are believed to be close to deciding that there are no major competition issues raised by the €6.3bn ($8.2bn) proposed takeover of Banca Antonveneta by ABN Amro.

Sources close to the competition commission said that it was likely the takeover would be dealt with under "simplified procedure", suggesting no serious competition issues have been identified at this stage of the investigation.
