The investment chief at the world’s second-biggest manager says passive may not be quite so massive

When Tim Buckley joined Vanguard in 1991, his friends thought he was joining an airline. In one respect, they weren’t completely mistaken. Since boarding the US asset manager more than two decades ago, the firm has certainly taken off.

In 1990, the firm managed $55.8 billion. Now it is second only to BlackRock in terms of assets under management, with Buckley, who has been chief investment officer since 2013, overseeing more than $3 trillion.
