Gavin Lewis’s mother was one of the Windrush generation who held down two jobs — as a seamstress and packer —  when she got to the UK, and then later minded charity shops while studying to be a nurse on a student grant.

“I know I'm privileged,” the BlackRock managing director says, adding that while it’s “always a contentious term” it doesn’t need to be. “My privilege came through hard work, as many people’s do unless it’s something you’re born into. But otherwise, hard work, and grafters, as we would call it in Tottenham.”
