Andrea Orcel emerges as front-runner for UniCredit top job

The Italian banker has kept a relatively low profile since a remarkable U-turn by Santander in January 2019 when it withdrew its offer for the CEO job over pay concerns

Andrea Orcel, one of the City's most high-profile dealmakers, has emerged as a front-runner as the new chief executive of UniCredit, despite still being embroiled in a lawsuit with Santander after it withdrew its offer to the Italian banker for its top job.

Orcel is reportedly in talks with the Italian bank as it looks for a successor to Jean Pierre Mustier as CEO after he unexpectedly stepped down in November over strategic differences with Unicredit's board.
