The head of UBS's investment bank has likened his division to the national football team of Croatia, which surprised sports fans around the globe this summer by reaching its first ever World Cup Final.

Andrea Orcel, who has overseen a vast restructuring and shrinking of UBS's banking and trading operations during the last six years, told staff in a memo that they could draw inspiration from the eastern European nation of little more than four million people.
