Automation signals birth of the hybrid market

The US Securities and Exchange Commission's proposed changes to the trade-through rule, which forces brokers to execute trades at best price, are sending tremors through the markets.

The change could remove the obligation to go for best price, which favours the New York Stock Exchange, and automated "fast" markets are set to benefit. Floor-based exchanges, like the NYSE, are being forced to embrace technology, bringing them closer to their electronic rivals such as Nasdaq.
