The reshaping of HSBC’s global banking and global markets units last week undid some of the changes made when Samir Assaf was promoted to run HSBC’s investment bank.

With primary market business set apart in capital financing, trading conducted in the markets division and origination managed from a discreet client coverage unit, the new organisation is more akin to a traditional investment banking model than the slightly eccentric arrangement that it is replacing.
