Balanced managers turn in best returns since 1999

Schroders and Scottish Widows were among some of the traditional investment houses in the UK to achieve strong final quarter returns in 2003 as fund managers enjoyed their first year in positive territory since 1999.

Fund managers last year returned an average of 18.1%, according to performance measurer Russell/Mellon Caps, that helped claw back heavy losses they suffered during the three-year bear market.
