The Bank of England has lost track of £50bn of banknotes that are probably being used by criminals or circulating in the grey economy, according to a committee of MPs.

The Public Accounts Committee, a watchdog which monitors the effectiveness of public finances, accused the Bank of having a “lax attitude to the whereabouts of the bulk of sterling cash supply, or ensuring it remains accessible to households and the high street”.
