Now that global merger and acquisition activity is back at the highs of five years ago, it is important to ask whether the trend is set to continue and what could reverse it.

M&A bankers will say the market today has little in common with the heady days of 2000 and that there will therefore be no slump next year as there was in 2001. But then they would say that, wouldn't they?
