Banks insist Abbey sale can withstand Botin charges

Spanish banking boss faces months in court

Advisers to Santander Central Hispano and Abbey National insisted on Thursday that the impending trial of Emilio Botin, Santander's chairman, for alleged tax evasion would not derail the merger.

The banks played down the significance of the high-profile case in Spain's National Court, even though Botin faces up to one year in court and could face jail for four years if found guilty.
