Bob Diamond, chief executive of Barclays Capital, is poised to join the main board of the UK-based banking group. Sources close to the bank claimed the promotion was an acknowledgement of his achievements.

Diamond has helped increase pre-tax profits at Barclays Capital to more than £1bn (€1.4bn) for the first time and is spearheading a dramatic expansion drive that kicked off more than a year ago.
