It was investment bankers who did the heavy lifting in the group's CIB division in the second quarter – but it was a big loss at group level

Barclays investment bankers helped to lessen the impact of falling revenues from their colleagues in sales and trading during a difficult second quarter for the bank.

The UK bank made a £1.4bn loss during the three months to June 30, hit by a loss on the sale of part of its African business and charges for mis-selling payment protection insurance. Revenues of £5bn were 15% lower than a year ago.
