Barclays Global Investors, the fund manager traditionally known as an indexation specialist, has hired Gail Armstrong from Merrill Lynch Investment Managers to manage its core institutional clients.

Armstrong will be looking after mainly UK clients and report to Miles O'Connor, who heads the core client team in the firm's London office.
