Barclays has embarked on an aggressive hiring programme in continental Europe as the UK banking giant moves to Brexit-proof its business amid concerns it is too exposed to Britain’s impending departure from the European Union.

The UK lender has hired eight senior bankers on the continent and will recruit another eight before the end of the year, reversing a strategic plan instigated by former chief executive Antony Jenkins to partially retreat from Europe.
