Barclays paid average bonuses to top employees in its investment bank of £642,000 last year, a sharp decrease on last year as banks have taken an axe to compensation amid a slump in deal activity.

The UK lender paid £1.2bn to 864 so-called material risk-takers within its investment bank, which is by far the largest number of key employees whose actions can impact the risk profile of the bank.
