Shareholders who were already calling on Barclays to phase out fossil-fuel lending welcome the bank's move, but urge their peers to keep the pressure on

Barclays has announced its plans to achieve “net zero” carbon emissions by 2050 as pressure mounts on banks to reduce their environmental impact.

The bank’s chair Nigel Higgins made the announcement to the firm’s shareholders in its annual Environmental, Social and Governance report, published on 30 March.
