The number of new whistleblower cases at Barclays dropped by almost a third in 2019, the year after Jes Staley, the bank’s chief executive, was fined for trying to expose the person behind an anonymous letter alleging wrongdoing.

In its annual report, published on 13 February, the bank said its whistleblowing team opened 254 investigations in 2019, compared with 364 in 2018. This is the first year Barclays has published the figures.
