Fashion and finance came together amicably for the seventh year running at Barclays Capital's dinner at the London Natural History Museum last week. It was a jolly occasion, with a gaggle of models showing off the creations of designer Emmanuel Ungaro to a crowd of financiers, pumped up by Shirley Bassey's glorious rendition of Hey Big Spender. And the man himself got into the spirit, appearing in a suitably City of London look – pinstripes.
Meanwhile, anti-royalists had the opportunity to crack jokes about dinosaurs as they peered through the legs of a 100-foot diplodocus at the Duke of York receiving a cheque for the Outward Bound charity from the bank's chief executive, Bob Diamond. He remained remarkably good humoured, despite the fact that the divine Shirley, sadly, ignored his special request to sing â wait for it â Diamonds Are Forever.
