US judge approves Barclays settlement despite concern

Allows UK bank to avoid prosecution on charges that it violated US economic sanctions

A federal judge yesterday approved a $298m (€232m) legal settlement that allows Barclays Bank to avoid prosecution on charges that it violated US economic sanctions, despite voicing concerns that the agreement is too lenient.

In approving the settlement, US District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan said it wasn't his job to micromanage how the US Justice Department handles a prosecution.
