The UK will enter lockdown from tonight to combat the spread of the respiratory disease Covid-19, prime minister Boris Johnson announced in a televised address.

People will be allowed to leave their households for four reasons: shopping for basic necessities as “infrequently as possible”; one form of exercise per day; any medical need or to care for a vulnerable person; or travelling to and from work when this is necessary, if individuals cannot work from home.
