UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce that more areas of England will be put under Tier Four restrictions from Boxing Day due to a faster-spreading variant of coronavirus, according to media reports.

The Sun reported that ministers and scientific experts held meetings late on 22 December after a sharp rise in the number of cases of the new Covid-19 strain, adding that an announcement on the restrictions could come as soon as 23 December.
