BP Amoco was last night preparing for a long US court battle to salvage its proposed takeover of Atlantic Richfield (Arco) after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted to block the $27bn deal, reports the Financial Times.

The FTC decision to try to block the deal would be the biggest challenge to a merger in history.
