Joseph Safra, the founder of Banco Safra and for a time the world's most wealthy banker, has died aged 82.

Safra died of natural causes, according to a statement from J. Safra Sarasin. Under the umbrella of the family's J. Safra Group, Safra controlled a number of banking interests including Zurich-headquartered J. Safra Sarasin, Banco Safra in São Paulo and the Safra National Bank of New York.
