The UK's British Telecommunications is forging ahead with plans to exercise its right to force an initial public offering of Airtel, the Spanish mobile phone operator majority owned by BT's arch rival Vodafone.

The UK telecoms company confirmed on Tuesday morning that discussions were at a very early stage with Vodafone and Airtel management and that a float was being considered as part of BT's disposal programme.
