Byers takes backseat in UK M&A regulation

Stephen Byers, the UK Trade & Industry Secretary, has promised to take a back seat in the decision-making process for UK mergers and acquisition cases, saying he will leave it to the independent competition authorities.

The move should effectively de-politicise and speed up the process. However, Byers might step in on a small minority of merger cases where exceptional public interest issues are raised.
